Jaguars Roll in the Second Half

December 13, 2011

The Boulder Creek boys basketball team took a step closer to playing up to their full potential Tuesday night as they emerged victorious over Mountain Ridge 73-53.
A well balanced offensive attack that pounded the ball inside got the Jags off to a solid start. At times the combination of well executed offense and strong defense sent the Jaguars up by as many as 8 points. But just as quickly as they surged ahead, turnovers and defensive lapses allowed Mountain Ridge back in the game. Particularly poor inbounds defense under the Mountain Ridge basket led to cheap scores. At halftime the Jags led 26-22.
In the third quarter Boulder Creek showed great intensity on both offense and defense. Weston Newell drove to the basket numerous times and scored, assisted, or went to the free throw line. Josh Braun outmuscled the opposition with strong offensive rebounding and put backs. And Stephen Crim drove hard, scoring on layups or free throws. Once again 6’8” Connor Kuchar came off the bench and gave the Jags strong minutes. At one point Kuchar set up in the low post, held position, and YELLED for the ball. That is the kind of aggressive play this team needs to become an elite Arizona Division I basketball team!!
Randyll Roberts did another exceptional job handling the full court pressure and running the offense. Coach Walker was able to rest Roberts and substitute Johnnie Panfil. The Jags didn’t blink with Panfil running the offense and continued to build the lead. By the end of the third quarter the Jags led 50-38.
The Jags showed some killer instinct in the fourth quarter. The intensity of the third quarter continued and they extended the lead to 20 points. Marcus Jarrett came in and hit a couple of 3’s from the wing and the Jags rolled to the finish. At the end Weston Newell tallied 21 points, Josh Braun 19, and Stephen Crim 17.
