The more things change, the more they remain the same. The Boulder Creek Jaguars faced a new opponent on Friday evening but the outcome was a familiar refrain. The Jags took the measure of visiting Valley Vista winning in convincing fashion by a score of 85-60. Once again Boulder Creek started strong and by halftime had built a 22 point lead, the outcome all but assured. A running clock in the 4th quarter was the only thing that limited Boulder Creek all night as they poured it on for the first 3 quarters. Want consistency? How about 5 players scoring in double figures and 6 players that shot at least 50% from the field! Want unselfishness? How about 18 assists! Want hard work? How about 35 team rebounds! Defense and ball movement again were exceptional and both are becoming routine for this team.
Valley Vista was determined to pick their poison and elected to pressure the BC guards and limit their ability to burn them from beyond the arc. That strategy worked to some extent but the Jags simply transitioned to a potent inside game and Valley Vista paid the price. Boulder Creek center Alex Dykhuizen (19 points, 8 rebounds) and forward Joe Simpson (17 points, 10 rebounds) took turns punishing the Monsoon from mid and close range. Ryan Crane (13 points, 2 assists), Weston Newell (12 points, 6 assists), and Ryan Zettle (6 points, 4 assists) scored consistently from the perimeter and effectively moved the ball in masterful fashion all night. BC welcomed back 2 key players in Cort Watson and freshman Josh Braun (10 points) and also got the usual solid play from Jake Hunt (5 points), Ryan Benn and Benji Rutan. Minutes were again liberally distributed to the roster by Coach Randy Walker and Boulder Creek heads into the home stretch of their season healthy and well rested.
At 19-2 the Jags are the talk of the Northwest region and highly ranked in Class 5A2. With only 5 games left in their regular season Boulder Creek must continue to take each opponent seriously and maintain their focus to best position the team for a playoff run. The Jaguars have 2 away games next week facing regional rivals Goldwater on Tuesday and Mountain Ridge on Friday.
