Jaguars take second place at Horizon Tournament

The Boulder Creek Jaguars dropped a heartbreaker Saturday night, losing in the Horizon Invitational championship game to Scottsdale Christian Academy 71-67.

The game was intense with both teams playing hard down to the wire. The Jaguars got off to a slow start in the first quarter falling behind by 7 points, however they came back strong in the second quarter and closed the gap to just a single point at the half.

The second half was hotly contested and exciting. Scottsdale Christian's height proved to be a challenge for the Jaguars but an aggressive defense helped make up for it. In the end the game was decided from the free throw line, the victors enjoying a sizable advantage there as well.

Boulder Creek was led in scoring by Alex Dykhuizen with 20 points and Ryan Crane with 19 points. Ryan Zettle and Josh Braun chipped in with 11 and 8 points respectively and Weston Newell again turned in a solid defensive effort against a much taller opponent.

Both Crane and Dykhuizen were selected to the All Tournament Team. The Jags can be proud of their second place finish and many in attendance were impressed with their teamwork and tenacity. Though disappointing a tough loss like this will make them stronger and better prepared later in the season and Coach Randy Walker and his staff will no doubt have them ready.

Boulder Creek will next see action in the Great Desert Shootout tournament at Cactus Shadows High School, which gets underway on December 28th. That promises to be a great event with a lot of top notch competition.

The Jaguars received good fan support last night and hope to see it at the upcoming tournament. The Jags wish all their fans a very Merry Christmas.
