Boulder Creek took another big step forward last night in its march toward capturing the Horizon Invitational Tournament with a 60-52 victory over region rival Deer Valley. The Jags came out strong in the game and never relinquished the lead, which grew to double digits in the second half.
One of the hallmarks of this team is an aggressive defense that proved to be too much for the Skyhawks to penetrate on a consistent basis and contributed to numerous turnovers. Offensively the Jags were again paced by senior co-captains Alex Dykhuizen and Ryan Crane, who scored 22 and 19 points respectively. The Jags also got solid contributions on both ends of the court from Weston Newell, Josh Braun, Joe Simpson and point guard Ryan Zettle.
As usual Coach Randy Walker was able to rely on his reserves to be productive in support roles when starters were in foul trouble or needed a rest.
The Jags take on impressive Scottsdale Christian Academy at 6 PM on Saturday in the tournament championship game, which promises to be intense. Boulder Creek stands at 8-1 going into the game and the team is starting to get noticed in basketball circles. Come out tonight and support the Jags in their quest for the championship.
