Jags pull out a victory against Desert Edge

The Jags launched their 2009/2010 basketball campaign with a hard fought low scoring victory over a very athletic visiting Dessert Edge team. The teams traded leads all night with the Jags finally prevailing in a 40 to 38 nail biter. The team showed great determination and an ability to work together, especially defensively as they were aggressive and reacted well to Dessert Edge’s offensive attack. Sophomore Weston Newell was initially assigned to guard the athletic Ryan Whitehead, a player destined for the next level. Newell stepped up to the challenge and did a very effective job limiting Whitehead’s scoring and penetration to the basket. When Newell faced foul trouble he received great help from teammate Cort Watson. Watson has the ability to bring a spark to the floor and has an aggressiveness that wears down the opponent. Ryan Zettle led the Jags with 4 steals and chased down 4 rebounds. Ryan Crane was active defensively and also hit a very important 3 point shot to help shift the momentum of the game and energize the crowd to a frenzy. Josh Braun played beyond his years and had 9 points, 2 blocks and 6 rebounds. Alex Dykhuizen demonstrated great senior leadership and was able to penetrate to the hoop and put Desert Edge into foul trouble. Dykhuizen had 23 points and pulled down 10 boards and contributed 2 blocks. The Jags showed that they have the ability to pick up where they left off last season and their fans are ready for the ride.

Be sure to come out next Tuesday, Dec. 1st when the Jags take on Desert Mountain at home.
